Our Story
Julia and John Breckenridge – Owners of the Crystal Cave / Educators
The Breckenridge’s own the minerals, crystals, gems and fossils on exhibit here at the Crystal Cave, which was tirelessly accumulated by them over a 60 year period. The specimens on display have been collected from a wide variety of countries, however many are local to Ontario. Along with extensive experience teaching in colleges, schools, and interested groups, Julia has also gained her vast knowledge from all across the globe. Julia is a biologist with a background in geology with a BSc ED. Other areas of education include Ontario Teachers Certificate and certification in Special Education aimed at providing classes for gifted children and children with special needs. Julia’s macro-photography of the various mineral specimens are also on display and for sale in the museum.
David Breckenridge - Media Tech.
Son of John and Julia, David is an arts graduate specializing in media production. David has created over 64 audio clips that are accessible on mobile devices of visitors to the Crystal Cave using QR codes (bring your head phones). The codes allow visitors to use their phone to link to a detailed audio tour, that provides insights and education presented by the museum founder Julia Breckenridge. In addition, David has produced Augmented Reality elements that permit visitors to not only see dinosaur bones in the exhibit, but to encounter a virtual 3D dinosaur on their phones.
Braelyn Rose – Owner of the Crystal Cave Shoppe/Workshop facilitator
Born in Sudbury and raised by a family of geologists, Braelyn is an artist with two Degrees in Fine Arts from the Ontario Collage of Art and Design and the Nova Scotia Collage of Art and Design. Braelyn operates the Crystal Cave Shoppe where she creates and makes everything by hand. From hand polishing found rock, to crocheted jewelry, fountain and display making, enchanting wands and rainbow makers. She also facilitates workshops, guided meditations and sound bathes.
Braelyn has never learned how to drive.
James Toth - Owner of the Crystal Cave Shoppe/Property Manager
With a degree in photography and business, James is the property and marketing manager of the Crystal Cave. He oversees the day to day operations of the property and it’s various tenants, and deals with all the financial aspects. His landscape and nature photography are also on display and for sale in the newest addition to Crystal Cave: James Toth Photography
Luckily James has his licence, and drives Braelyn… mostly crazy.
